    Description

Blake-Hart bottles are the scarcest and earliest type of square milk bottle, having patented July 12, 1927. The typical Blake-Hart square bottle has on the heel a milk bottle inside a heart. This was the typical trademark of the bottles. However, Blake-Hart is not a manufacturer of these bottles but rather was a collaboration of two men, Irva J. Blake and Harry H. Hart of Sacramento, California. Blake owned a dairy and Hart owned a series of restaurants.  Their bottles were manufactured by several different glass companies, Hazel Atlas and Illinois Pacific Glass Company among them.
The size, weight and dimensions of these bottles put them in the 1920s and 1930s in terms of age-dating them. Most of the examples that have been identified come from California, Washington  and Oregon dairies. They also turn up as honey bottles.
My source information is, not only my own collection, which I am now liquidating, but Glass Milk Bottles: Their Makers And Marks (1980) by Jeffrey L. Giarde.
This particular half-pint is from United Milk Co, San Francisco. It post-dates 1927 because of the patent date on the front heel.
It is labeled on the front:
    United
    Milk
    Co.
    S.F.
    U.S. Pat. 1635811
    July 12, 1927
    On the back is:
    1/2 pint
(the plant 21, San Francisco, mark of Owens-Illinois and a 4 to the right, presumably, 1934)
The bottle is in almost mint condition. There is no case wear.
Note: The black on the lettering on the bottle is only poster paint and is easily removed. It was applied to aid in display only. Please let me know if you want it removed before shipping, otherwise it will be shipped as is.
